State Visit of Her Excellency Droupadi Murmu
The visit of the President of India, Her Excellency Droupadi Murmu, was particularly special because it commemorated the 150 years of Indian immigration in Suriname. It was a celebration of the rich cultural heritage and historical significance of this event.
Throughout the visit, Her Excellency traveled to various significant locations in the capital to attend ceremonies and pay homage to the Indian immigration journey. It was a journey back in time, connecting the present with the past, and honoring the struggles, achievements, and contributions of the Indian community in Suriname.
From schools to temples, the President visited these important cultural institutions that have played a vital role in preserving Indian traditions and values in Suriname. The vibrant and diverse Indian culture was on full display during these visits, showcasing the profound impact it has had on the country.
One of the highlights of the visit was the commemorative fair held at the same site where the Indians arrived in Suriname 150 years ago—the historic landing spot of the ship named “The Lalla Rookh.” It must have been an emotional and symbolic moment for the President, as well as for all those in attendance. The fair served as a reminder of the remarkable journey undertaken by those brave souls who left their homeland behind and embarked on a new chapter in Suriname.
By commemorating this milestone, the state visit not only celebrated the past but also emphasized the enduring ties between India and Suriname. It fostered a sense of unity, appreciation, and respect for the shared history and cultural heritage of both nations.
As a photographer, being present at these significant locations and capturing the essence of these ceremonies was a truly humbling experience. It allowed me to witness the deep-rooted connections between cultures, generations, and history. The images I captured will serve as a visual reminder of this momentous occasion for generations to come.
Being a part of this state visit was like running a marathon. I was constantly on my feet, capturing one function after another alongside some amazing Indian photographers. The energy in the air was infectious, and I couldn’t help but feel the excitement buzzing around me.
One of the best parts of my photography journey is the chance to be in the same room as influential and powerful personalities. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate enough to capture moments with dignitaries such as the President of India (obviously!), Suriname, Guyana, The King of Gana (yes, a real-life king!), and even the Prime Minister of the Netherlands. And let’s not forget about all the leaders and top industry figures right here in Suriname!
Every time I find myself in such esteemed company, I’m overwhelmed with a sense of honor. The moments I capture in history, like those handshakes on game-changing deals, remind me of the immense impact these events have on shaping our future. Being in the room, hearing those powerful speeches, and witnessing history unfold before my eyes is truly awe-inspiring. But let me tell you, it’s not all glamorous—it’s also a nerve-racking experience.
To be successful in this line of work, you need to be alert and ready for anything. You have to stay on your toes, both physically and mentally. Spotting those decisive moments before they happen is crucial. It’s like being a photography ninja, always anticipating the next move and capturing it in a fraction of a second. But hey, that’s what makes it so exciting!
Despite the pressure and the occasional jolt of nerves, I loved every single second of this state visit. The thrill of being in the midst of such historic moments is indescribable. The rush of adrenaline as I snapped away, documenting the events that will shape our future—it’s a feeling like no other.
Now, here’s a pro tip for all my fellow photographers out there, especially if you find yourself shooting marathon days like I did: WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES. Trust me on this one; your feet will thank you! When you’re on your feet for twelve-plus hours, having supportive and comfortable footwear can make all the difference. Your passion for photography shouldn’t come at the cost of painful blisters or sore feet, right?
So, my friends here’s to the next opportunity to capture history in the making!
PS. If you ever see me running around with a huge grin on my face, it’s probably because I’m wearing the comfiest shoes you could ever imagine! 😉
